More gothic in style/setting than other Simenon books that I have read. It wasn't bad. Not great, but not bad.

This was a good Maigret. Almost a close space mystery where nothing is what it seems and every single one of the persons involved are dangerous and lethal. Maigret finds a way to unravel the dark tale in his non assuming yet very bad ass way.

A wonderfully atmospheric and descriptive Maigret story. Love the spooky start and the amazingly taught plot considering such a small location & cast of characters. Everyone is so well drawn in Simenon's trademark sparce yet vivid style. Also 1930s rural France is so alive and just jumps off the page.
