The ending! 😱 How am I going to have the wherewithal to wait for the next book!?
I was sad to see our trio split up for most of this book. However, I appreciate the time taken to develop them individually. I think it will lead to a stronger dynamic between them all next book. Inara got on my nerves at times BUT she's a child and she acted as a child would. I can't hate her for that. I also liked seeing Kissen grapple with her unyielding hatred of all gods and how we see that hatred crack as she gets a larger world view and more introspection. While this felt slower than book 1, I enjoyed it for the character development and the direction the plot is going, even if the funny banter and found family dynamic was missing in this installment.
2025 cannot come fast enough!

Loved this second installment in the Fallen Gods series! The first one still holds a greater piece of my heart as it is what brought these amazing characters together in the first place, however, I'm very excited about the developments (both plot and character) throughout this book and I can't wait to see what's next!

The different threads of politics and religion running throughout this book, the insistent pressure of monotheism, the manic feverish belief in different gods made this book feel so tense. It places belief firmly within these ever shifting shades of grey. Inara's loss of any sort of innocence in this book and her changing relationship with Skedi is so interesting. Elo's loss of faith in his life as a soldier is so heart-rending. I do wish Kissen was with them, but I understood the need for her to be elsewhere to have a better scope of the political changes in Middren. The twists at the end of this book were amazing and the scene where Inara cuts off her hair is so powerful, particularly after so many characters attempted to infantilise her throughout this whole book, particularly Elo.
