“She had lived her early years as though she were waiting for something she might, but never did, become.”
This is a story about the inarticulate nature of our innermost feelings, about obsession, heartbreak and voyeurism that is written in an elusive and hallucinatory language. Constantly shifting point of view but it’s a delight to read. Need to buy hard copy to underline all the goodies. Loved it 😍

A pretty fascinating mix of passion and detachment.

I wanted to like this book but I just couldn’t. The premise was fine and reminded me of other books from that time period but I absolutely suffered through Duras’ writing style.

I have adored some of Duras' other writings (especially The Lover), but didn't enjoy this one at all. It felt disjointed and hard to follow and I had no affection for any of the characters. It took me ages to get through what should have been a quick read. Because I know she was an incredible writer I would like to blame this book on bad translation, but I don't know if that is the case.
