There are some very heavy parts to this book, but they add to the story in such a way I don't think it would be possible to omit them in any way. There is a transperson in the book, but they do not experience, at least not that is mentioned in major detail, dysmorphia. There is a brief mention of transphobia when
their parents quietly disown them, only in part because they are transgender, not the primary reason.

Tietoa muokataan aina tilanteeseen sopivaksi.

Viides vuodenaika on (tieteis?)fantasiaa aikuisille. Kuten fantasia yleensäkin, on tämäkin yhteiskunnallinen kannanotto. Oman maailmamme korrelaatioiden ohella kirjassa on erityisen paljon orjuutta, esineellistämistä, ihmisyyden riistämistä, alentamista. Hiton Vartijat.

Teos on mainiosti jäsennelty ja antaa lukijalle paljon ajatuksia, palkiten lukijaa tarjotessaan tälle tilaa keksiä omia teorioitaan, eikä syötä aivan kaikkea kädestä pitäen.

The first in a phenomenal but devastating series. Intergenerational trauma is a main focus, so be prepared emotionally. But it’s one of the best series I’ve ever read and worth all the pain.

"But each of us is just another weapon, to them. Just another useful monster, just another fucking rogga."

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison is a science fiction? Fantasy? Both? Either way, this book was amazing. I'm not gonna lie, it was a slow start until I starting putting it together. I'm slow on the uptake sometimes.

In the world of The Stillness there is a fifth Season, basically the apocalypse due to massive earthquakes or super vulcano eruptions. Because if this, the society has adapted to disaster preparedness. I found it interesting that in this world, Earth is referred to as Father Earth rather than the more commonly know Mother Earth. Father Earth is characterized as evil and vengeful and hopes humanity is eventually destroyed. They say Father Earth hates the Orogenes for taking his only son. But no one knows what that means.

Orogenes (or rogga-slur) are people born with the ability to manipulate the earth; controlling earthquakes and volcano eruptions. In this world they are oppressed and used for their abilities and killed with impunity. We follow one such person and learn of the horrors she witness and the lengths she took to get away from it.

This book was incredible and intricate and delightfully original. I loved the MC, curmudgeonly as she sometimes was. The stuff about the Obelisks are fascinating and I can't wait to learn more next book. I don't want to say too much more for fear of spoilers. Great rep in this book! We have trans rep, gay rep, bi rep, and polyamory rep! Jemison is just incredible. Also, my new favorite cuss is Earth's flaming farts!

Unlike a lot of fantasy series, this book feels like a complete book unto itself. While I found the characters compelling and the plot sufficiently intriguing, I don't feel like I would be missing out on anything if I don't continue onto the next instalment.

The various settings are so vivid that I could almost taste the ash or smell the sea air. My favourite character was probably Syenite and the end of her story is so utterly tragic. For the longest time, I thought she was going to screw up her happy-ever-after for herself but, in the end, powers beyond her control brought it crashing down around her ears in the worst way possible.
I know Syenite is technically the same person as Essun and Damaya but it was that incarnation that I enjoyed most.

I know the use of second-person is quite controversial but I found it very effective and it put me in the mindset of the character much more believably than a lot of first-person novels I've read. However, I read this on audio, so I'm expecting to get the story told to me, so it might be more jarring in print.

This would have been 5 stars, except I reserve those for new favourites and I can't see myself wanting to reread this anytime soon.

I have found a new favourite fantasy series! This kept me on the edge of my seat and the writing was beautiful. The twist 2/3rds of the way through is one that you kick yourself for not seeing coming and the world-building is immense but not completely given away in this book. There is still so much to learn!
