not really sure how i feel about this one. i thought it was an interesting premise, though the blurb is pretty wrong at times... the writing was easy to read (i think that is butler thing though). it touched on some pretty hard topics but it wasn't overly descriptive, so i didn't mind it. the pacing was quite off/slow, and i didn't really care for the characters.

Oof. This book was compelling and horrifying. It hit waaayyyy too close on several topics, and has inspired a few new nightmares for me. I enjoyed it immensely, but could have done without the constant addition of new characters in the second half. They felt more like padding/added plot than necessary.

So good! It took me a while to really get into this book, but Lauren's voice is very compelling and the plot developed really well. It is an extremely bleak book, but that matches the "if this goes on" feeling I have in general about the world. In fact, the core of the book remains hopeful, in a deep, strong, and constructive way. It is a brilliant idea to infuse such wisdom and strength of character in a young person who has very little reason to remain alive and kicking, and yet chooses to build community not because it is easy and fluffy, but because it is the hard work of keeping the world alive. Can't wait for the second book.

Extremely dark and dystopian, yet compelling. I didn't really want to keep reading the incredibly dystopian near-future that this depicted, but I couldn't put the book down. I really liked Lauren's voice and the characters, although I did find her romance weird.

However, I'm not going to continue reading the series, because this book ends without a cliffhanger, and I don't think I can stomach another book with this kind of dystopian setting
