This is a beautiful story that kept me reading. I loved the descriptive writing that left me feeling familiar to the people and places; it transported me to the outer banks. I could feel the sea breeze, hear the gulls, the grasshoppers and frogs and feel the sun against my skin. When words manipulate my emotion so that I feel fear, trepidation, blush, lust... I fall in love and I do love this one. The story was intriguing and the ending completely got me. ;)

WOAH

It was beautifully written!!! But I kinda saw the ending coming.

Okay, I totally got the firefly reference right away. The way she compared humans to insects and animals in the way that they mate... I mean... cmon.

Part of me thought it was Tate though because of the hat fibers.

I tried, I really tried. But this was so extremely slow and boring. I even got the audiobook to force myself to finish it while doing other chores, but couldn’t get past half of it. I don’t get the hype.

I did enjoy this book, but I’m not as effusively positive as many. I always hesitated to pick it up as I didn’t think I was so excited about a book set in the southern swamplands, and indeed, I wasn’t. But a well-written, interesting book, heartbreaking story with notes of joy. There’s a reason why everyone has read this & I’m glad I did, but it’s not finding a place on any favorite novels lists for me.
