Rating of 3.5. I like the book, especially the way Owens depicts nature as its own "character" and how she shows the effects of human isolation. However, I could put down the book without hesitation and wasn't really shocked or touched by the ending.
This is a real tear jerker, seems to be quite polarising with reviewers but I loved it
Delia Owens first novel, “Where the Crawdads Sing” is one of the most moving stories I’ve read in a long time. Whether it is in the personal story of Kya or the deep look into a part of nature that is not as well known as many other areas of study, it is enthralling and arouses your curiosity at the same time.
The pathos of young Kya’s story and the ongoing issues she experiences touch our deepest emotions and always leaves you anticipating what is coming next and feeling deeply close to this young girl/woman.
The interweaving of the story between the past and present, intertwining two separate time frames into one kept my interest so keenly I hardly could stop reading.
I thought the entire story was excellent and led me deeply into the two main characters of Tate and Kya and especially as a lover of the natural world, I was enthralled by the study of the marsh and it’s detail and amount of information woven into the story line.
Our natural world is a precious commodity that sustains us as a species and we imperil our own survival by ignoring the interconnections and our destructive tendencies that Ms. Owens demonstrates so well in this book. It is a truly worthwhile read on many levels!

I really enjoyed this. It reminded me of A Girl of the Limberlost, although obviously a bit darker. Solid plot. I don’t always like switches back and forth in time, but I didn’t mind it in this book and felt like it worked for the story. Would recommend.
Okay, dit is een zeldzame recensie van mij. Ik geef een boek normaal gesproken 100 bladzijdes de kans, maar dat is mij niet gelukt. Ik heb uiteenlopende recensies gelezen, maar dit was voor nu een DNF voor mij.

Het verhaal begint met een proloog. Er is iemand dood gevonden in het moeras. Maar eerst word er heel uitgebreid uitgelegd wat het verschil is tussen een moeras en drasland. Voor mij was dit niet nodig en toen had ik al mijn vraagtekens. En dan begint het echte verhaal. Ook dit was voor mij erg verwarrend want je verspringt in tijd met compleet andere personages die (nog) niks met elkaar te maken hebben. Over het algemeen gaat het over Kya, wie door haar moeder en broers en zussen word achtergelaten bij haar vader in het moeras. Kys is 5 jaar oud op dat moment.

De omgeving, alle dieren in het moeras en de ellende die kya meemaakt word zo uitgebreid beschreven dat ik er een beetje moedeloos van werd. De helft van de beesten/insecten die genoemd worden moest ik opzoeken, wat ik ook niet echt fijn vond. Er zit ook vrij weinig tempo in en er word heel erg gefocust op de natuur.
