Another enjoyable read in which Winspear explores a piece of British history that I wasn't as familiar with - in this case the Indians who lived there in the 1930s.

This was not my favorite of the Maisie Dobbs series. The plot was fine but the characters were challenging. It feels like they’re unnecessarily creating their own drama. The whole thing just fell a bit flat for me.
This book ends like it's the end of the series with Maisie shutting up her business and heading for India for an unknown length of time. But I see there is another book number 11. Hopefully she'll find her smile in her travels.
One of the things I like about the Maisie Dobbs books is that they are not overly glamorous and sensational, however, they are thought provoking, provide historical insight and have wonderful characters.
Maisie has continued to grow in her deductive reasoning and believability as a detective. I am sorry that this novel seems to be a big set up for...

This was not my favorite installment of the Maisie Dobbs saga. I find the perpetual "will they, won't they" with James Compton to be a bit wearing. His character must feel this burden as well, as tells Maisie he can no longer wait indefinitely for her to decide if she wants to be married to him. With this firm deadline as well as a convoluted case our Maisie has her hands full in this chapter of her life.
She finds herself on the case of a murdered Indian woman whose death was only nominally investigated by Scotland Yard. When the woman's brother arrives demanding answers Detective Inspector Caldwell puts Maisie on the case to try and find answers, and justice, for the woman's family.
Throughout the course of her investigation, she decides that before committing to any more permanent future she should follow in the footsteps of her esteemed Dr. Blanche and travel internationally. This case helps push her towards India, and we have a long, loooooong reminisce where Maisie visits everyone that we have been introduced to throughout the series, and if I hadn't known better I would have thought this was the last book in the series. The ending was somewhat unsatisfying, and instead of looking forward to Maisie's next chapter, it just left me feeling glad that this one was behind us.

Maisie is tops in my list. Methodical and creative, drives her own car and has her own money. Good advice if you can take it.
I enjoyed the diversity of this book and its focus on issues important to women.
