it only happens in the movies

in the beginning, i really liked this book but that was until the part i read where he 'cheated' on her. the reason i put quotations over the word cheated is that whilst i was reading that scene, it seemed to be less like him cheating and more like him being taken advantage of.

this is the line that solidified my hatred for this book:

"No, he protested. "Not as first. I woke up, your message woke me up. I...I..." He shook his head, looked away, looked back. "I...woke up with Rosie. I...I didn't know what happened. I had to ask her."

ladies, gentlemen and everyone else in between, tell me does that sound like he had consented? of course not and this is further proved by how he very clearly said that he was intoxicated during that time.

"I was wasted Audrey. I was so drunk. The absinthe...Ouch."

after this, could you really tell me he was 'lying'? this genuinely sounds like a dude who felt genuinely uncomfortable with what happened but did not know how to express it. if you still think, "no, way. this seems kinda far fetched." then please enlighten me, would you have felt the same if it was a woman who was saying what he said?

maybe that wasn't the authors intent, but it still made me uncomfortable how normalised it is to ignore signs of sexual assault for men.

the reason i felt the need to talk about this is because as a sexual assault survivor myself i couldn’t in good conscious recommend this book to anyone else. my experiences might be different because i’m a woman however at the end of the day, this is gross way to talk possible assault.
