I loved this book! I decided recently to reread the series before reading King's Cage and started with this amazing novella! Coriane wasn't really talked about in the Red Queen and it was really neat to learn about how her family was considered a "lower" high house and were almost in ruin before she became a favorite of Tibe. And it was sweet to see the young love between her brother Julian and Sara Skonos. I would've loved to learn more about how she lost her tongue within the series tho. Can't wait to finish the series (well kind of ;) )

Was a very slow read hope the rest of the series makes up for it

Okay. I LOVED this novella about Coriane, the first queen - Cals mother. I loved reading about her relationship with her brother Julian and his love Sara. Definitely learned things about Coriane that I never would have guessed. It was super interesting reading about the conflict between Coriane and Elara too. There is definitely foreshadowing that plays a huge part in the book that is revealed in book 4 of the series - War Storm. I’m happy I read this novella and didn’t end skipping it!

4.75! A little taste to make you hate Elara even more...Fuel to the fire! I was left wanting just a bit more...Just a bit!! Yet it was still amazing!

Overall 5/5

I wanted to read this before starting the Red Queen series, so I assume if you’ve read the first book the events of this novella are mentioned. But I did not know how things were going to end - this was SO SAD. I’ve never cried at a novella before but I was tearing up at the end. I believe we’re meant to believe a specific cause of these events hinted at the end, but even aside from that, it really captures what it’s like to struggle with mental health. This was sad, then sweet, then sad. But now I’m excited to read Red Queen because Victoria made me feel things I didn’t think I could in only 55 pages.

Having just finished 'Red Queen', this slight but dark little tale of the King's first wife expands nicely on the hints given in the novel.
