Unique and super cool magic system and band of thieves, what more could we want?

My first Sanderson and I can see why people are hooked!

Book 26 of 2021! The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Book 26!!! This means I have completed my goal of reading 26 books before I turn 26 in July! Whoop Whoop! Go me! Of course, I'll be creating a new goal now.

Anyway back to the actual book, The Final Empire! I enjoyed it but I don't think this lives up to the hype. It's a great book, I'm not saying it's not. I just felt like there was a lot of talking about doing something and not actually doing it.

I didn't instantly like the characters either, which I think is a biggie. I got more attached to them towards the very end of the book. The twists and turns were great. The inquisitors seemed unnaturally spiteful and out to cause pain, which I didn't understand.

I'd like to know more about Vin's powers, I also enjoyed her character development. The main female characters in Sanderson's books aren't written for you to love them instantly. Vin goes from street urchin to Assasin! There's never really a love triangle either, so it's not predictable and that makes it enjoyable.

Sazed, my favourite character in this book <3
Excited to read book no.2!

I’m currently cursing my past self for sitting on this for so long. So bloody good, what a way to start the year. Glad I have The Well of Ascension ready to read!

Sen ne yaptın be adam? Utanır insan böyle güzel yazılır mı?

i enjoyed her SO SO MUCH. my first brandon sanderson book and i already feel like falling in love with his writing and storytelling. i could tell in some parts that this was indeed a book that was released in 2006 lmao, the middle got a bit repetitive but by the end i literally couldn’t guess anything and was at the edge of my seat. i will never forgive anyone if kelsier is actually dead though, it took a piece of my heart i cannot do without him plsplplspls.
i love the character work, i am absolutely in love with the world and the magic system. i dont like the romance but whats new, lets see when will i gather the strength to start the second book. love u brandonnnn even though i hate u for offing my fav for life :((((

“Belief isn't simply a thing for fair times and bright days. What is belief - what is faith - if you don't continue in it after failure? Anyone can believe in someone, or something that always succeeds. But failure, ah, now, that is hard to believe in, certainly and truly. Difficult enough to have value.”

Holy. Shit.

For the first 80% of The Final Empire, I was enjoying a solid 4 star fantasy read, great characters, intriguing heist plot, fascinating world building.

But when I reached those final 150 pages, I swear to God I literally couldn't put this down and nearly cried when I finished. I've since learned that apparently this is Sanderson's signature move (the "Sanderlanche"), and now I understand why people worship this man.

The world building is absolutely phenomenal. Scadriel feels like a place you could live in (if you could survive it), with the most unique magic system I've ever encountered. Allomancy is brilliant, instead of vague hand waving, we get clear rules about ingesting and burning metals for specific powers. Learning it alongside Vin made every discovery feel earned.

Speaking of Vin, what a phenomenal character.
SpoilerWatching this traumatized street urchin girl learning to trust Kelsier and his crew, while still maintaining her core vulnerabilities was incredible. Her relationship with Kelsier is genuinely touching ("Mare always wanted a daughter", if you know, you know), and their mentor-student dynamic was so beautifully written, especially knowing Kelsier's tragic backstory
. The entire crew (Ham, Breeze, Spook, Clubs, and the rest) felt like a found family with perfect banter that kept the slower-paced sections engaging.

Yes, Sanderson's prose is pretty basic, but I think it actually worked in the book's favor. The straightforward writing made the complex worldbuilding easier to follow and let me focus on the incredible story Sanderson's telling. Sure, the pacing is slow at times and it's long, but the payoff is absolutely worth it, and I think it actually wraps up beautifully as a standalone, and people don't have to commit to the whole series if they're intimidated.

But not me, so excuse me while I immediately start book two.
medium-paced

A re-read that I started like 2 years ago ... Embarrassing!

I love this book for a lot of reasons and don't really want to spend the next 30 minutes listing them all, mostly because it's wayy past my bedtime and I have a long trip ahead of me tomorrow.

But trust that the characters and the world building are top-notch, and I am still obsessed with this magic system.

This is like the perfect amount of romance btw

I definitely understand the hype for the Cosmere now. The magic system was awesome. Loved the heist plot. Thoroughly enjoyed our two main POVs in Vin and Kelsier, found family will get me every time.

I will say there were a couple plot points that didn't age well particularly the "romance" between Vin and a secondary character as well as the misogynistic tone of part of Vin's character development and becoming "a true respectable noble lady" focusing on attending balls and dressing up in gowns etc.

Overall, I have zero clue where this series is headed but I'm along for the ride.
