I really liked the writing style, the concept and the world presented, however it felt a bit rushed and underdeveloped, mostly with regards to the romance. I feel like with maybe 50 pages more it would have worked for me better, as the characters and relationships felt too surface-level for me to care. Still, a very enjoyable read of filial obedience and defiance, toxic love, manipulation, political intrigues and emotional strength.

None of the characters were likeable or had any sense of growth, the plot was a jumbled mess at best with little background to the intesne political issues happening in the book. There wasn't enough detail and the story continously jumped from present to past in the middle of paragraphs. The story lacked cohesiveness. While I already typically dislike love-triangles, I absolutely despised the one happening in this story. There was also the very jarring scene of domestic abuse which was also poorly written. So much of the world was made up and based off of other things in real life but there was no explaination as to how these things changed between reality and fiction. Overall, both the story and characters were incredibly poorly written.

This was such an emotional and surprising story. I related to the main character immediately, especially her need to feel worthy of love. I loved how the story addressed abuse; I think it was a realistic portrayal of how it makes us doubt ourselves, even if the truth is right in front of us.

My only disappointment was that the story wasn't longer. While I loved the direction the story took, I think the end felt a bit rushed.
