a cute yet underbaked novella. thanh was, to put it bluntly, a dislikable idiot and her plotlines were unconvincing in regards to the character that we see on the page. the other characters were there mostly, aside from the mother, who i couldn’t figure what the author wanted me to think about her. i’m assuming we’re supposed to feel bad and disagree with her mother calling her a stubborn selfish idiot who’s bad at her job but she IS a stubborn selfish idiot who’s bad at her job.

the
endgame romance
was awfully rushed and uninteresting (considering their backstory, it didn’t need to be) it but it saved me from the clutches of
eldris x thanh
so i can find it in my heart to forgive it.

this book does fall prey to the narrative of “violence upon your abusers / colonizers makes you just as bad as they are! see how you can go too far!” which i feel as if every fiction book that is even vaguely about abuse or colonization takes this position and i’d dearly like for authors to cut that shit out. it is not nuanced, it is not revolutionary, it’s not even interesting. do something else.

I'm going to be honest... I really thought this was a Five-stars read... but something ...maybe in the way that is written difficult me read the story... when I was in page 30 after more or less a moth since I start the book I found myself frustrated because : yes I was full for college but u thought that I would end this book in a week or 2 weeks but one month later I ended the story.

I found myself wanted to scream to Thanh, to say to her that all the decision she made or that others makes her made was wrong, the her lover (her colonizer)  do not see her like a same person but as a barbarian as a less person.

I can see why everybody loved this book, myself (my story , ect) can relate to Thanh, i loved her, i wanted the best for her but maybe the author needed more pages to explore the profundities in all the relationships... maybe if we could see more deep in the story would be a Five star story for me ...

I had to let my thoughts percolate a while for this one before reviewing. I wanted to like it. It had promise, but I'm just not sure it ever came through. I did find the romance elements sweet. The magic/fantasy elements and world weren't very detailed, but they were still interesting. However, the character development stopped short of giving me enough to care about them, and the story meandered to nowhere. It is a novella so it makes sense that it wouldn't go too deep, but I love good short stories because they have to be focused on the most important people, moments and details in order to suck you in. This did not measure up, got a little redundant in places (not good when the author only uses so many words to tell the story) and felt unresolved.

gay.

queer abusive relationships! neat!
some logical/timeline issues with the plot
ugh, I really wanted Eldris to be revealed as the dirtbag she is, but Giang's offense was kind of lukewarm. DESTROY HER.
Giang <> Thanh relationship underdeveloped
