The pacing of the book was a bit irritating, when you thought there would be progress made by one of the two main characters, there would be some kind of setback and that seemed a bit excessive at times. However, this was my first time reading a second chance romance so maybe that is just how they are paced. Overall , it was a nice romance.

I. Loved. This. This was one of those "hammer it in 24 hours" type of books.

Historically, marriage in trouble wasn't frequently worked for me. Second chance, yes. Which seems opposing opinion wise, but I am a fickle creature šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

However, marriage in trouble where the problematic partner develops ACTUAL self awareness and takes full responsibility of their partner in the trouble? We stan a self aware King. Even though it took a divorce to actually realise they're the one with the problem šŸ˜’

I know people had beef with him signing the divorce papers instead of fighting to get her back first, but I think they're missing the significance of him signing them. He signed them FOR HER. Because he knew that's what she wanted, and what she needed from him in that moment. Sacrifice.

The pining. Ohhhhhh the pining. Mutual, yes. But Alessandra had Dom in knots over her and I loved it. The idiot deserved it after neglecting her, although I do seriously empathise with his reasoning, I refuse to believe anyone would miss all the red flags šŸ˜«

You should read this if you love a grovel, you love strong assertive FMCs, and you appreciate a strong redemption arc.

I had a feeling going into the book it would be my least favorite, I was right. There wasnā€™t enough on their background information, and the character of Alessandra was really bad. I didnā€™t like her at all for the fact that she didnā€™t have a spine nor did she have any self respect or confidence. Overall, wish I would have went without reading.

I loved it!! Somehow I love Dominic but some part of me just can't forgive him... But I love his character development and I am so happy because we had quite a few scenes with characters from the other books (Jules&Josh,Vivian&Dante,Kai&Isabella) and I love that they have babies and I need more baby scenes I need to see more of Josephine/Josieā™”ā™”ā™” And the dark element with Roman. It was so good I think I fell in love with Romanā™”ā™”ā™”

My summary: On the cusp of their ten year wedding anniversary, Dominic and Alessandra Davenport seem to have it all. The ambitious and gorgeous billionaire Dominic is the so-called King of Wall Street. The stunning and smart Alessandra has her wealthy husband, penthouse, and has started a thriving business of her own. Once college sweethearts, Alessandra now, however, feels like Dominic is married more to his work than to her. Tired of feeling neglected and unwanted, Alessandra leaves, but Dominic is devastated and determined to do anything to win her back.

My thoughts:
I read this book in December 2023. I really enjoyed it and, overall, found it to be really sweet. Then I saw some audio snippets that Ana Huang posted from the audiobook and I just had
 to listen to it.

When I read the book, Alessandra's melancholy and Dominic's desperation punched me right in the feels. Ana Huang does a fantastic job of making you empathize with both Alessandra and Dominic throughout the story. My heart broke for both of them.

Listening to it, though, was quite a different experience and Iā€™m overall pretty fascinated by just how different it was for me. The audiobook made me feel like Alessandra was the selfish one and I felt terribly for Dominic. It came across that he was so hardworking for *their* future and she was just whiny and left him anyway and then rebuffed all his attempts at reconciliation.

I struggled a bit with the narrators in this one. I think the way Alessandraā€™s character came across so differently in the audiobook is due to the female narratorā€™s intonation throughout it. I get that Alessandraā€™s character is quite melancholy through the entirety of the book, but she was just SO depressed sounding that listening to her was roughā€”especially since her portion is roughly half of the eight and a half hour audiobook.

This has the same male narrator, Teddy Hamilton, as Rosie Dananā€™s The Roommate that I just listened to recently (as well as apparently a TON of other audiobooks). He comes across as, I donā€™t know, a little too California-surfer sounding to me to be a great fit as Dominicā€™s character. Heā€™s not my favorite but he is definitely better than average for male narrators, so I did enjoy his narration.

Also, Chapter 18 = still solid gold.

Whether the book or audiobook, this is an overall good message for those of us that have to work a lot to remember that your job is your job but itā€™s important to put your marriage first.
And even though, like Dominic, you may feel like you're one bad decision at work away from losing it all, it's more important to put family first.

Heartbreaking. Utterly and completely heartbreaking. Reading this felt like someone ripped my heart out of my chest, dissected it in front of me -- slowly and painfully -- and then stitched all the broken pieces back together again.
I mean, I've read enough of Ana Huang's books at this point to trust her and her devotion to Happily Ever Afters...but she made me earn it with this one. She certainly made Dominic earn it, at the very least. And let me tell you, after two books (King of Wrath and King of Pride) of seeing his and Alessandra's interactions on the sidelines, he had it coming. This book was literally 321 pages of groveling. And I loved every excruciating page...even and especially the ones that made me cry (of which there were many), which is saying something...because I don't like being sad on purpose.
Achingly beautiful. Painful in the healing. Joyful in the reconciliation. Excellent.
