I don't have a ton to say about this book, and for once, that's not a bad thing.

I understand that the main criticisms are the overall lack of plot and a weak magic system. I agree with those assessments.
However, what really made this book for me (and aided in the overall decision to continue the series) is the character development.

Based on how everyone was written in the first half of this book, I genuinely thought I'd end up super disappointed in an entire cast of cardboard "people," but that's not what happened.
I'm actually excited to learn how these characters continue to develop, and I'm interested to see the decisions they make as the story progresses.

Also, the jury is still out on how I feel about Gabe. His character in particular for me is equal parts heartbreaking and infuriating.

Love triangle kinda but I want Lore with Bastian lol. Gabe just reminds me of Chaol from Throne of Glass. I want to like him but i find him soooooo annoying.

3.5/3.75 stars
This was a fun book. I enjoyed the story and had a good time. Some kicking my feet and giggling along the way. Some of the storylines could have used more depth, more time taken with them. The plot was predictable. There were parts of the book where it felt like I was just begging the main characters to figure it out. I would give this book 4 stars because I truly did enjoy it. The magic system was unique and the world building was done well. But it needed just a little bit more character development and more “meat” to the storyline.

This book took me an insanely long time to read, and I think it’s because I was just never really all that excited to pick it back up. I don’t think Whitten knew exactly where the story was going to end up, and it therefore felt disjointed throughout. With all that said, there were definitely some elements of this book I still enjoyed: the complex magic system, court politics/palace intrigue, and such a strong resemblance to the Celaena/Chaol/Dorian relationship from ToG, which was fun. Overall, it wasn’t bad but I doubt I’ll continue on in the series

I don’t know what to say????? I am very excited to read the next because I have so many question!!! I’m excited to see how this trio spans out. Just when I think I have it figured out who Lore is gonna end up with, something happens and I’m all turned around again!!! I didn’t and still don’t know who to trust- people were switching up and switching up again! I really liked the magic system, even if some parts of it were predictable.
Also the ending has me confused on how these characters are going to play out? People who I thought were good may end up being WAY more morally gray than I thought. I’m suspicious and excited for more

So boring!  Hard time connecting to the characters.  Plot seemed forced.  Don’t waste your time
