the best classic story i've reread this book probably about 5 times

Haven't read this since I was a kid; I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook (narrated by Kate Winslet) as much as I loved the book when I was younger :)

I talked about the Matilda characters in this video.

In a video I posted about my January reads, I discussed a little about the magic of re-reading, specifically Jane Eyre. In the comments, there was a small discussion about books we wish we'd read earlier in life and this, my first Roald Dahl book ever, certainly falls into that category. I wish I'd read this and loved this as a child.

Even just being familiar with the popular film, I was taken aback by how uncomfortable the story made me. Here, at the surface is the story of a precocious and gifted child. However, it plays on the background of incredible neglect and child abuse. It's all told so casually and purposefully so. There were times I had to pause in my reading to really ingest what was happening.

It's a deceptively light book with a proper happy ending and one I imagine could strike so many different threads of conversations: absentee parenting, the value of reading and learning, LISTENING TO CHILDREN AND BELIEVING THEM, treating children as right people, speaking up in the face of abuse and so much more.

Just re-read it -- what a joy. It's completely charming--a good one to read again and again.

I read this book so many times as a child. And loved it every time. And now I sit here with an English Literature degree, on goodreads with an interview for an assistant librarian job lined up and a house overflowing with books :)

This audio book, narrated by Kate Winslet, was so fun to listen to. Matilda is such a good story! Love love love it.

A little different from the movie, but I can tell the movie does the book justice. Matilda is a brilliant little girl who helps Ms. Honey with the dreaded Trunchbull. Wonderful book, if you've seen the movie, read this. If you haven't seen the movie nor read the book, do both!

This was the first book I read in elementary school that I finished in a single day, it was really fun. A great children's book.
