Ugh… you know.. this book has one of my favorite tropes and had so much potential but it just did not deliver it.
Rose see herself in a marriage of convenience with Jack. She inherited a spot in Madison ave where she could open her bakery shop, but only if she was married.. and the spot would be for her husband.. not her (ugh.. started terribly). Jack is a lawyer that wanted to get married to her bc he wanted the property which they agreed would be his after 2 years (again.. what the hell)
So.. the premise was so misogynistic.. but let’s continue..
he is grumpy and she is all sunshine. We learned in the middle of the book that she has a disease (and for a moment I thought they would pull a Nicholas Sparks on me but thankfully they didn’t). With the time and all obstacles they started to warm up to each other. The big problem is that actually her ex-fiancé was involved in this story. The conflict with the ex-fiance was so boring.. he could have been an amazing villain but he just appeared 3 times and it didn’t feel like a threat at all. Additionally, the groveling during the third act breakup was not much.. like.. why even break it off it it wouldn’t be dramatic.
Additionally all Jack’s POVs were bland. He should be yearning a lot for her since he is grumpy and hides his feelings (during her POVs), but he was just unseasoned hahaha
I almost dnf’ed bc it was so freaking predictable.. I just didn’t bc I thought that maybe when the tropes I was expecting came it would be nice.. but it wasn’t.

I finished this book yesterday, but I've had such a difficult time rating this book. Some parts were 4 stars. Some parts 1 star. In the end I settled on 2, as it mostly was just an okay read.
The beginning was a bit odd and rough, but I was quite enjoying it. I liked their interactions. But I just lost interest after a while. I try to avoid books with
On top of that, there was also the big reason/secret.
I liked them at first, but the evolution of their relationship made me lose interest and made me like both characters a little less. When the 'big secret' comes out, it's resolved too quickly and honestly, I had lost interest already.
Their romance is a very very slow burn. It takes forever for them to get together. It's also a really long book. I regret devoting so much time to this in the end.

an illness, unless I specifically choose to read one. I'm not a fan of books who just throw that at you, unexpectedly. Also, it was just pretty gross to constantly read about her dripping nose. It felt like her illness was used as a plot device. It usually is ofcourse, but it was just a tad too obvious here. And I started to lose interest. On top of that, there was also the big reason/secret

which was completely lame. He just wanted her for himself so he pressured her to marry him. He paid off her ex fiance to disappear. He paid of her relatives who randomly and oddly keep showing up. He feels like he gets to decide her entire life for her and he's not even sorry.I liked them at first, but the evolution of their relationship made me lose interest and made me like both characters a little less. The tension in the beginning was so good and the family/ ex-fiancé plots had so much potential but towards the end it got predictable (but not in an enjoyable way). Saccharine, unnecessarily long & a bit boring.
This was so sweet, but with tension.
A slow burn marriage of convenience.
“I would share my door with you”
Sure, maybe Jack pursued Rose for odd reasons and maybe began their relationship with a lie. But they fell in love!!!!! They became family.
Especially during her sickness, my heart just aches for them.

3.5 ⭐️ The first half was everything you want in a slow burn. But the story fizzles out quickly and it became hard to finish. Plot twist at was predictable and overall the book needed 100 less pages to tell the same story.

Marriage for One is full of all the swoony slow burn goodness. I was obsessed with Rose and Jack’s story. But mostly Jack, let’s be honest. I have a soft spot for brooding heroes and Jack is certainly one of my new favorites. Jack and Rose’s marriage of convenience story was delightful. This is the second of Ella’s books I’ve read and I’ve loved them both. Clearly I need to spend some more time with her backlist.
But, I digress. Back to Jack and Rose. Their story was unconventional and unique. I don’t read a ton of marriage of convenience stories, but this book made me want to look for more of them. The reason for Jack’s proposal doesn’t become clear until later in the story — and I’m not going to tell you what it is — but I enjoyed getting to the point where all the pieces fell together. Of course, I was so enamored with Jack and Rose, their chemistry and the delicious slow burn between them, that I pretty much never wanted this book to end.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Favorite Quotes:
You could fall in love with that face, with that smile, even if the package came with the frown and prickly personality.
“I’m right here, Rose. I might not be what you wanted or needed, but you got me anyway. I’m right here.”
“Your heart has a home with me, Rose. No matter what, never forget that.”
3.5 stars | no plot at all, but the grumpy x sunshine trope was done well
cute story but there was no plot??? idk she could’ve done so much more with the characters
Secrets aren’t good but I love both the hero and heroine in this book!
