Reading Dennett and his crane to end all cranes take on human self consciousness and society, and the idea of the extended phenotype, I couldn't help but remember McLuhan. I hadn't read this since my undergrad days but it's every bit as insightful as I remember.
"The book is an extension of the eye."

Timeless book of a brilliant collection of thoughts and images to make you think about our culture.

this plus Baudrillard + Debord = babby's first internet theory imo
“There is absolutely no inevitability as long as there is a willingness to contemplate what is happening.”
This was a research read for some foundational framework for an academic research paper, so I come here from a bit of a biased perspective, already expecting some answers and introspection into theoretical ideas of technological mediation.
This book offers some insight into that, promoting an idea that man has an agency in creating mediums that define societal roles and broader cultural impact, a return to an electric village where technology acts as an extension of cognitive functions. So while this was definitely interesting, the content itself is completely absurd and clearly satirical, splashing ads and parody material in between observations and attempted predictions of cultural shifts.
Definitely a unique dive and one-shot reading session. Closed the book with a few pages highlighted and a little lightbulb telling me to look back into McLuhan when I have more time.

“It was not the machine, but what one did with the machine, that was the meaning or the message”
McLuhan’s essays on technology and the wave of consumerist capitalism ‘The Medium is the Message’ essentially argue that the way you choose to talk to someone—the tool or medium you use—influences how that person receives your message. The important thing about media is not the messages they carry but the way the medium itself affects human consciousness and society at large, for example owning a TV is more significant than anything we watch on it. McLuhan’s ideas were interesting, especially considering modern forms of advertisement that rely on captivating shortening attention spans through social media noise.
This ties into my dissertation in suggesting that while the content of Nursery Rhyme is essentially children’s nonsense, the value comes in how Orwell chooses to use the medium of rhyme as a familiar concept for readers, and hence use the medium to channel a completely separate political message. The cover being very reminiscent of the themes of 1984 here is pure coincidence!
