Reviews with content warning for Alcohol - They Wish They Were Us

as a book targeted as a murder mystery, i wish it didn’t take so long for the actual mystery part of it to start to develop properly, and that we got to see more investigating motives, clues, alibis etc., as it felt like the only things that jill actually did was find one clue and then speak to a couple other people about what happened, and it was very focused on the whole ‘player’ thing (which i did find a bit interesting however i think a lot of the whole situation was extremely weird and that it did not need to be so centred on it - especially when

shaila’s murder ended up having basically nothing to do with it.

as for the actual murderer, i did find it a bit predictable, as we were barely given any suspects to suspect instead. some parts of the book were just extremely uncomfortable to read (i.e the multiple scenes of men cheering on and telling two girls to kiss, the multiple sexual assault scenes that were a bit glossed over etc., and although jill did try and change the whole thing at the end, i think it took way too long for someone to change something.

it seemed very dated, not like interactions high schoolers in 2020 would have had. i enjoyed the talk of corruption within the school and community but nothing really seemed to be done about it. LGBTQ characters are ONLY there for representation. i was really looking forward to this novel and found myself rather disappointed. i had heard- the plot twist was insane but to me, i had it figured out about halfway through. the story overall was good but it could have been so much better.
