I don't have the words! This series lives up to its reputation! I was smiling one minute only to feel sick to my stomach a few pages later. The characters in this book are written so well that it rips you apart when something horrible befalls them. There are descriptions of events from this book that I can't stop thinking about! Bring on Memories of Ice!

Will DNF this series because I have loads of tbr books and I am not honestly enjoying this.

I had a hard time connecting to the characters and keeping track of all the storylines, but it definitely got better and started feeling more cohesive toward the end. I'll give book 3 a chance to wow me before I give up on the series.

Re-read for Malazan Fallen group

4.5

You can do slow that are boring or you can do slow books the Erikson's way.

de 5 stele: lumea complexă, detaliată, foarte bine construită. Poveștile interesante și originale. Luptele foarte bine descrise.

5 Stars for Narration by Ralph Lister

At this point, I can honestly say that I'm not fan of the way the author has chosen to write the series. I do appreciate the story more on the re-read but a story should be great from the first reading and even better on the second. I disliked half of this book on the first round and about 40% on the re-read. Erikson is a good writer. Good enough to make the series engaging to the reader without being intentionally obtuse.

I read several books with cool concepts & poor progression or weak writing. So it's nice to come back Deadhouse Gates and think, "Good writing! Yay!"

The reason why I enjoyed the book more was due to the fact that I made it to book 4 and a lot of stuff made more sense or connections after reading up to that point & coming back.

I actually liked GotM better than this one. The constant "do" without explaining much or giving more details is annoying. There's a lot to be curious about but the way the author delivers the story doesn't lead me to think it will all be given.

I can never get enough of Erikson’s Malazan series. Witty, complex, original, sophisticated and intelligent are all words that come to mind. Erikson’s vision is so large that, even two books into the series, you only have a vague inkling of where the plot might be heading. Brilliant characterisation compels you to keep turning the pages, as the tale is picked up on the continent of the seven cities. Faced with a local rebellion, it’s all the soldiers of the Malazan armies can do to stay alive, as gods, prophecies and a corrupt empire all conspire against them.
