reread from year 7/8 english :)
this was quite a bit more problematic than i remembered in the way that it presents some themes. It casually mentions self-h*rm, ab*rtions, eating disorders, and gruesome death without any warning and glosses over/presents these events as if they were normal behaviours. I can see how it could be very harmful to such a young audience as it didn't seem to discourage these behaviours at all, rather it presented them in a way that made them seem ideal (eg. binding and starving were presented as a goal for the girls of the village, but nothing was said about how it was bad - all the book did was glorify it and use this glorification as a major plot point) and it made me feel quite angry at the thought that this book may have been an introduction to harmful behaviour for so many young children - potentially for the other girls in my class too.

A good middle school aged book. The side characters were a little lack luster, but the subplot of the
unknowingly forced abortions/miscarriages
was crazy!
