What can I say about this?

I think the issue that I see is that I can’t get myself behind the hype.

I pushed myself to finish this book. I listened to the audiobook and then finished off the book in print.

I didn’t care for this book at all. I thought that the story was told in an interesting way but I feel like it’s lazy storytelling. By setting this up as a multitude of interviews, Reid gets to tell instead of show. We get hearsay about the people from that time. We get feminist narratives that are pushed on the characters instead of developed. I understand where that comes from and I wanted to root for some of the characters but I disliked all of them because their perceptions of each other were wholly negative. Not to mention the stereotypes trotted in.

This book got a lot of hype because of the quotable quotes and the 70’s rock backdrop. I mean, who doesn’t like Fleetwood Mac? As for the execution and the story building, it just wasn’t there. It felt like a mixture of A Star is Born and the movie Almost Famous. I just felt like it didn’t bring a whole lot of new stuff to the table.

I really wanted to like this. But after this, I need to take a break from hyped books.

3 stars.

Fresh writing perspective with transcript of interviews spliced together.  Be swept away with the characters and lifestyle.  Gets you in the feels. Same author who wrote Carrie Soto but a totally different feel and a more compelling read.  Can see why it was made into a tv series.
