Heart-Shaped Box

Joe Hill

This book was meant to be a horror but I didn't find it scary at all. At first I found it a little bit silly, but after a while I got into the story and just enjoyed it for that. I ended up really liking the two main characters and found myself caring about what was going to happen to them. I don't think it should really be classed as a horror but I liked it anyway.

A good read, but ultimately, I can't remember it after finishing it a couple weeks ago.

4.0 stars. I knew this was a ghost story coming into it and honestly that's not exactly my thing, but this was better than I expected. Not exactly scary (although there was a scene that gave me the creeps a bit), I'd probably use the word 'suspenseful' to describe it. I was expecting something more from the ending, and that dragged it down a touch for me, but I still enjoyed it enough to warrant a fairly high score. I will be picking up another book by Joe in the future. I hear his short story collections are especially good.

Took me awhile to read because I didn't find it gripping enough to dedicate my time to. It's a good book, but meh.

Tw for csa and suicide ...wish I had known tbh

This was a gritty ghost story. Of course, ultimately, it was the tale of a male predator. It took me a bit longer than usual to get through it. I had to put the story down a few times. Jude was a difficult person to like but I definitely agreed with his point of view on how he handled Florida's mental illness.

I liked this quite a bit. I was struggling with liking a male character who was a middle aged rock star dating a 20 something year old though. But maybe that was the point. The story was very heartfelt. The book could have been a little bit shorter though.

I'm glad that I didn't start with this book. I might not have followed up with other's by Joe Hill. Not only was the pacing lacking, but the overall tone of the book was a let down when compared to other material Hill has written. I found it hard to dig in and chug along. Don't get me wrong the pace works, but the overall storytelling isn't there yet.
