solid book that effectively blends memoir and how-to. i was a little bit let down because i'd hoped for more context around the non-fiction pieces: it ended up more descriptive and perspectival than anything particularly comprehensive.

i also struggled with smith's simultaneous acknowledgement that there are opposing viewpoints to his––or even just concerns about his approaches to sustainability and restorative ocean farming––and refusal to do anything other than say they exist. no rebuttals were offered, or even explainers as to why folks feel that way. i liked what he had to say and learned heaps about sustainable food and restorative ocean farming, but without going into counterarguments, smith is inadvertently asking for a blind following, which i can't get down with.

i really enjoyed the memoir / ocean farming manual / kelp recipe book / climate change discussion that bren smith embarks on in this book. the narrator’s voice comes through truthfully - a welcome break from other climate change books steeped in academia and words meant to appeal to everyone. i feel like i learned a lot about ocean farming and have so many more questions!

Couldn't put it down. Smith's style is enchanting. What a life! What a future he envisions!
