Q Is For Quarry

Sue Grafton

3.78 AVERAGE

a weaving of fiction with a real unsolved murder case from 1969. In “Q” Is for Quarry, Kinsey teams up with two aging detectives—both compelling characters in their own right—to revisit a decades-old mystery involving an unidentified teenage girl found dead near a quarry. The case, long cold, becomes personal as they dig through layers of forgotten clues, small-town secrets, and fading memories. I listened on audio at one and a half speed.

this one was set up a little different than Sue’s other ones. It was still a fun cold case investigation. And apparently inspired by a true cold case that remains unsolved.

I read this because I needed the letter "Q" for the alphabet challenge. It was ok, but it wasn't one of my favorite reads.

As I was reading the book, I thought that the author seemed to be putting together an atypical story to fit into the the "quarry" description. It was nice to learn more about Dolan; since his details weren't very deep in the past, it provided more flexibility for the story. What started as a big longshot of a case, a lot of lucky breaks allowed for an eventual solution of the case. The deep development of the supporting cast of characters added a lot of possibilities to what eventually happened in the past and as a result of the investigation. It turns out to be related to an actual open-ended case, which added to the story with procedural details.

I liked all of these so much when they were published. It was nice to drop back in and see Kinsey! Sad that this real-life mystery has never been solved.
