I think this may be my favorite book in this series so far. I already loved the Buchanan brothers from the last book; this story just confirmed how wonderful they all are. Murine was a sort of punchline in To Marry a Scottish Laird, always fainting at the most inopportune moments. She also proved to be brave in that story. That bravery and strength of character are proven over and over in this book.

There is the usual peril in this story. An arrow to the back, being conked in the head, jumping out of burning buildings. You know, everyday life in the world of Lynsay Sands and Highland Brides. At least she can’t be called boring! In fact, her stories are so much fun because of the crazy shenanigans. That’s part of what keeps me going back for more, along with the great chemistry between her characters.

Dougal and Murine are no exception. They start out so sweet, with Dougal having an even greater need than usual to protect Murine and Murine not understanding why the taciturn Dougal makes her feel so safe. Dougal tries so hard to stay away once he realizes the extent of his attraction, but he cannot handle Murine being helped by even his own brothers.

Murine is on the run from her half-brother, who was basically ready to whore her out to make some money. When she comes across Dougal and a few of his brothers they realize she is their sister’s friend (and one-time savior) and escort her along her journey. Soon they are beset by odd happenings and aren’t sure if it’s her half-brother or if the danger is directed at the men for some unknown slight.

As expected, the Buchanans and friends band together to protect Murine as well as prove she was cheated out of her inheritance. All the while Murine and Dougal fall deeper in love.

Like I said, I loved this story. While you may not understand all of the connections between characters that come to help later in the book, I think that’s not necessary and it can be read as a standalone. But if you haven’t read this author before, be prepared to suspend your disbelief!
