If I gathered correctly from the introduction, this book is Smith's doctoral dissertation, or at least an edited copy of that dissertation. As such, those interested in Baptist theology will find it of interest, others, will probably find it rather dry.

Focusing in a bit more narrowly, Smith's book does a good job tracing some of the history behind the concepts of Soul Liberty and Soul Competency, and their relationship to confessions in Baptist Churches. What I wish was better covered was how these concepts connect back to questions of academic freedom.
