A classic well worth loving. Most of us who were horse-crazy as kids recognize at least the name of the book; I certainly read it several times as a child. However, it only improves with age. I am astonished by how excellent the writing is; O'Hara's descriptions are vivid and expressive. And despite the "10-year-old with a horse - obviously a children's book" appearance, O'Hara deals with some serious themes, including death, determination, marriage issues, and feminism. The book is excellent, a celebration of life, love and - horses.
Don't forget these old classic children/teen books, and their influence on developing the LOVE of reading. Many happy memories of this book, which, again, I read at least ten times.

I’ve owned this book since I was a kid and though I didn’t remember reading it, I knew there was a reason I kept it. The movie, in my opinion, takes too many liberties. I loved reading a horse story where the main character was a young boy for once. This book started off really slow, but it built in pace and by the end, I was absolutely hooked. Other than the fact that they called what was obviously a palomino horse a sorrel (just horse person problems), this book gave me so many feelings.
A definite recommendation for horse lovers of all ages.
Now excuse me while I go out and hug my horse.

This was one of my favorite books as a child, and I reread it many times. I loved Flicka, and I loved Ken's devotion to her.
Read it when I was 10 (more than one time). It's for children, but with adult themes, like death, the violence of nature, relationship... Truly an amazing book and series
I didn’t love this. The dad was cruel. I’m not into horses.
I read this at some point in my childhood and it was okay. Not my favorite horse story, and the only major thing I can remember about it is an episode involving barbed wire.
So, I'm not really into horse books, I never was. But, this was a touching story about a boy who learns responsibility with the help of Flicka, the colt his father gives to him. At first I thought the pace of the book was too slow, but it did suck me in and I found myself in tears toward the end of the book. (I was glad I wasn't driving at the time) I truly came to want Ken to succeed and for the whole family to prosper.
