As an adult reader who will read anything I thing sounds even mildly interesting, this little middle grade book surprised me. It had far darker themes than a book with the age suggestion of 10-12 would be thought to have. So I really feel this one would be better for more mature readers in that age range. But also for older readers. The book is built around the story of a serial killer, after all. Imaginative, dark, but fun, I really enjoyed this one and that surprised me especially considering I was afraid I'd find it too simple and geared towards someone much younger. A good Halloween read.

“All stories are keys to a truth. Sometimes a truth about the world. Sometimes a truth about love or fear. Sometimes, even, a truth about a lie. But all keys, all truths.”

The truths of this story are numerous and beautiful. Grief, love, anxiety, strength, and self-assurance are just a few subjects that Lora Senf explores so beautifully as she introduces readers to Evie and Blight Harbor. With creepy creatures, wacky witches, and a swarm of protective swallows, Senf rounds out this powerful story and speaks truths that really resonate. This is one of my favorite books I’ve read in a while.
