Cute beach/summer read. The characters to me felt like they could be more well rounded but overall really nice to read, took me a day

Gloria, Dot, Liddy and Marjorie agreed to secret pact number thirty-four in 1962 that when their kids grow up and their husbands die, they will move to France. On the same day they started pact number thirty-five, The Dirty Book Club. "A fifty-four-year tradition that would save them all."
M.J. Stark's work was her escape. When she was editing other people's stories she forgot about her own, but when she was offered co-editor in chief of her magazine, it was a kick in the teeth. She was promised editor-in-chief, but her boss didn't think she could handle it by herself. Therefore, she left New York and moved to California to live with her boyfriend, Dan Hartwell.

This book had so much potential, I love that the heart of this book is the female friendships, not romantic interests. But it was very surface level, MJ did very little to try and get to know the other members of the DBC until it was falling apart. The twist about Jules husband I saw from a mile away, but the twist about Addie being Marjorie’s daughter did surprise me. Unfortunately such a massive plot twist was put right at the very end of the book and felt like it was done for shock value. I truly hate when books reveal a life altering secret at the end and then the story jumps ahead in time and the character it affected has accepted this news and is used to it. We were told about Addie’s mother and then the story jumps ahead. A reveal like that especially with a character like Addie who has big emotions but tries to pretend she doesn’t has no payoff when we don’t get to watch Addie process such a huge life altering piece of news. I did fly through this book because there were so many plot threads that had me hooked but the payoff was ultimately meh. I loved the clique series growing up so gave it a shot, but I feel like far too much was thrown at us in a single book, so it was impossible for there to be a satisfying payoff for every plot point.
