Reread # idk lol
This is still one of my absolute favorite books in existence. I pick up my (completely falling apart) copy every few years and reread it because something about it just won’t release its grip on my soul.

When I first discovered Ellen Hopkins, I was still deep in a cult-y evangelical home (I actually got in trouble and reprimanded by the pastors wife for reading her books because of the mature themes). Sure, some of the themes probably weren’t the best thing for a 12/13 year old to be reading.. but I distinctly remember the Hopkins books being some of the only things I had access to that actually opened my eyes to the real (not imagined) dangers of drugs, alcohol, sex, and how serious mental health should be taken.

Still love this book and probably always will. It reads quick, and while I’m much older now than when it first gripped me, it still speaks to me. This read through the ending felt so, so rushed, but that’s probably a mix of it actually being rushed and also because I’ve read it countless times already and know the tragedy that’s coming

This is my favorite of the Ellen Hopkins books I've read thus far. I connected with the main character and really felt for her.

Hated the ending because I'm a sucker for Happily Ever Afters. (sorry bouth the spoiler)I like how the author experiments with the form, but which the exceptions of a few brilliant poems, I think the story could be better told in a conventional manner. It does make for a quick read, though.

I have a lot of hate and a lot of love for this book.
I didn't like the way the author made Mormons into bad people, but I kept reminding myself that this book is fiction.

emotional sad medium-paced

“You're like the ocean, Pattyn. Pretty enough on the surface, but dive down into your depths, you'll find beauty most people never see. Lucky me. I fell in, headfirst.” has me rolling kicking and screaming!!
i am absolutely obsessed with the way ellen hopkins writes her books and i loved this book so much, there was so much emotion in this book and the way she made me get so obsessed with ethan to then just rip him away like that :(

Good book but I thought it was a bit violent. I do think some kids go through this sad tale on their own, but I think there should have been a clearer end. Maybe Dad was able to be turned in and the kids were sent to foster care? Maybe Aunt J could have stepped in and helped the girls? I don't know. It was a bit of a rough ending for me.

Wow. Just wow. The ending was not one I was expecting at all.

I don't know how Hopkins pulls it off. She somehow manages to pull off some kind of twist that completely makes the okay book one or two stars better.

I have a few complaints, though. One, she really isn't, in my opinion, good at capturing a young person's voice. Two, her books are too similar with certain plots. But I've only read three, so maybe I'm wrong.
