This is a great historical fiction book with enough action, mystery, and oddities to satisfy most readers. It's was a re-read for me and I enjoyed it once again.

I really enjoyed this book. In a way, it reminded me of Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe. Very mysterious and adventurous. Definitely would recommend to young readers and even older readers will enjoy it. I had this sitting on my shelf for so long and wish I had read it sooner. Will definitely read again.

i purchased this book at Barnes way back in 2010 (or possibly 2011 idek) in hardback form mainly because of the newberry recognition. i was 12. as the years passed by, i just could never get myself to read via a hardback copy even though it was my own damn fault for not waiting for the paperback release in the first place lol

i’m happy to get this off my shelf is all i can say

I have this a three only because I was young when I first read this, and it didn't really impress me. I'm not saying that it's a bad story, it's wonderful, I just wasn't super impressed when I first read it. The plot was good, the characters were developed, and the pace was alright. For me, it's not a book that made such an impression that I'd want to read it again, nevertheless, despite my disliking to the story, it sits on my bookshelf.

After the first chapter of this book, I was really excited about it because it was well written, the story was compelling and the main character was intriguing. However, I got lost in the variety of storylines along the way. Normally I don't mind multiple perspectives in a book but this one had one main storyteller interspersed with different narrators telling other stories throughout (Hattie May's newspaper column, Miss Sadie's stories & letters from Ned). Overall I enjoyed the story and the characters but it was a bit too disjointed for me. I appreciated learning a bit about that time period in the US and to hear about the creativity of a town in reviving itself and getting out under the foot of unjust workplaces.

All in all I enjoyed the way it was written and the main character but it dragged at places for me and consequently I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped I would.

This book is set in Manifest, a ficticous town in Kansas. Being from Kansas, I could relate to the main character, Abilene (which is a real town in Kansas). I liked how the story unfolded through history and that the story and life of this main character was also found by digging into the past. A wonderful book for all Kansans and young adults!

such a great book. Leah has read this and I would love all of my girls to read it as well.

When Abilene Tucker arrives in Manifest, KS it does not quite live up to the stories her Daddy told her. She's spending the summer of 1936 while he's away earning money. As she gets to know the people of the town, and more importantly their stories she learns more of her own story.

This is a lovely story made even lovelier on audio.

Why had I not heard of this book prior to the beginning of January? As luck would have it, I happened to purchase this book a day before it won the coveted Newbery. I found it odd that such an unknown book won, but after reading it I now know why. This historical fiction story immediately sucked me in and held my interest. Though the plot took several twists and turns, it was not your predictable story. This is a must read!
