Yay for local authors!! And a really good telling of a slice of Kansas history, too.
Highly enjoyable. Mostly a tale about a girl trying to discover the town her father left (and discover who her father is at the same time), but also a bit mystery, a lot of depression history, and quirky characters.
I was going to say that "Moon Over Manifest" was a charming little book about life in small town America during the 1930's. Not so focused on the depression to be depressing, spunky main character, and two of her friends set off to collect information and solve a mystery from 1918. So you get a little glimpse of WWI, the Spanish Influenza, and Immigration in America, the Depression, and Prohibition. Then I finished the book. Wow! I did not think this would have such an emotional ending. Who knew the author could wrap up the story in such a powerful way. I LOVED this book!
DNF at 54% I was just bored to tears by the plot and secondary timeline. I didn’t care about any of the characters except Abilene and Shady.
I was born and raised in small towns (one in Kansas, one in Nebraska), and man did this book take me back. I mean took me back all the way to that corner-with-the-tall-fragrant-lilac-bushes kind of took me back, know what I mean?
Above all, Moon Over Manifest is a story of a town's mythology. If you've ever lived in a small town or even visited a small town for a spell, it's clear that the town itself is a character along with each individual citizen.
I loved reading this book from beginning to end, and it hit me how To Kill a Mockingbird hits people, I think. Moon Over Manifest absolutely deserved the Newbery award, and I hope many more to come.

Quaint little story about Abilene being sent to her father’s hometown for the summer. Abilene goes on a journey back into the past via old newspapers, letters, and a story from Miss Sadie. Themes of friendship, war, the Great Depression, family, and death.

WOW!!! This was such a great book. I loved how the stories mixed together to create such a wonderful book. The best part was after the book the author writes all that is fact in the story and how she came up with the fiction parts. I loved the insight.
