Charming! Delightful. Well done. Was pleased with the writing. I felt like I was in the story.
Also, Jenna Lamia is an incredible narrator. Her voice creates a vivid world for the story to move through.

Enjoyed this story a lot. A bit of historical fiction (scene set in a rural Kansas mining town during the time of the Depression) that includes some great insights into a community of immigrant families from all over Europe. Well written, a compelling mystery, and a surprise ending make this a great read for the whole family.
Excellent sense of place in a historical novel. Good characters and voice.

Moon Over Manifest: an interesting look into a small town in Kansas. Looking back from the depression to events that took place in the town during WWI for a girl left there by her vagabond father. As she looks for information on his past there, she finds a world she had known nothing about.
I was not a huge fan of Moon Over Manifest . The story was okay and the characters were well developed but it did not keep my interest as much as I thought that it would. The ending was really good and had an interesting twist, but it took way to long to get there. The book could have been a lot shorter and still had the same punch. Certain things were easily predictable and there were so many story lines that sometimes I had a hard time staying focused.
Some of the themes I felt we inappropriate and probably shouldn't be in a children's book. The KKK, speakeasys, and alcohol use are among some of the issues addressed in the book and I personally do not feel that they should be in a children's novel.
Overall I felt the book was okay, but I do not think that I would want to read it again.

really enjoyed this one...but no idea who I'd be able to hand-sell it to...and with that cover, hand-selling is required.
So it won the Newbery Medal and thus I read it. It will however collect dust on the shelf until some other group (e.g., Black-Eyed Susan) nominates it, because it is just too plain depressing. Lots of death and depression (as in the Great Depression). Loved the first couple of pages. Not nearly as good as Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (Newbery Honor last year).
The ending was good. I liked how the author tied in the two story lines. I am always amazed how one child can make such a powerful, positive change to a larger group of people. The town of Manifest is better off having Abilene amongst them.
