King is great at building characters from scratch, and he's no less masterful here. I simply found the story to be extremely slow at the beginning, which made it a struggle to get to the latter half of the book for me. My favorite parts are when Jack
battles his alcoholism.
Those felt the most real to me.

Stephen King's masterpiece...if he didn't feel it was necessary to use racist slurs every five seconds that in no way enriched the plot. If he can fully pull Rage out of print, he should also be willing to yank the harmful language from his books. It's would be so easy to express the violence and hatred of the hotel without using anti-black slurs. Disappointed but not surprised.

And someone please give this man a course in how to write women. I'm so tired.

I got about 50% through the book and that was a struggle. I don't have a problem with the book so much as a problem with the character of Jack Torrance. I have NEVER had a fictional character in a book, movie, or tv show upset me as much as him. I do want to possibly finish this book but I struggled with wanting to pick it up to get this far and it almost put me in a major reading slump because I was obsessing over this book and didn't want to read anything else, but I also did not want to read this either.
