Incredibly informative and powerful. The author was able to make his technical writing concise in a way that made it easier for me to understand than many nonfiction books I have tried to read.

Full transparency, I read this book in the wake of the new movie released this year. That said, I’m so grateful I did! This book is incredibly detailed and the authors attention to every small fact from the original Osage nation’s history, to their forcible relocation twice to Oklahoma, makes it a very informative and interesting read. He also covers the murders, relationships and backgrounds of involved victims, investigators, and criminals. He also explains what happened at trials, and aftermath and lasting legacy very respectfully.

I truly enjoyed this book. It was a little difficult to get into since it was so fact heavy, but overall he tells such a compelling narrative with thought and care going into the lasting impact on the Osage. I liked that he connected murders that occurred beyond the reservation and also explained the oil industry so it made more sense as to why the greed and murders would even happen in the first place.

I could not put this down. I finished in less than 48 hours. Even having already watched the movie (which I loved), this book still left me gasping and in tears. The book has a much broader scope and obviously gets into the weeds more than the movie. They are two separate entities for sure (I mean, obviously -- one is nonfiction and the other is a dramatized account).

LOVE the way the book is divided up and I love the self-reflexive nature of the last third. Hearing about the author's experience performing research and talking to relatives of victims and seeing how these harrowing events have impacted the future is stunning. This is the kind of history we need to be reading about -- the absolutely systemic and widespread nature of these murders exemplifies so much about how America operates. It definitely makes me want to read more about the west/southwest United States around the turn of the century, particularly from indigenous perspectives. Will be seeking out Osage authors writing about the reign of terror for sure. One of those stories that, unfortunately, is not at all surprising, but terrifying nonetheless.
