It is a lovely and sad story. I was surprised to find the protagonist was gone at the very beginning of the book, or at least her name is part of the book title. Yet the story reveals itself in such a creative way to mingle the past and the present very well. Especially it is based on a true story, per author's notes at the end of the book. All the characters are very well built as each of them has a great narration respectively.
4.5 This story hit the sweet spot of the kind of stories I love. A story of a family that will go to great lengths telling lies and keeping secrets- trying to protect those they love.
Quirky side note- I loved the setting of Atlantic City in the story and picked up on all the references of the streets in Monopoly game- finally looking up and finding out Monopoly is based on streets in Atlantic City

I thought the initial premise was kind of odd, tbh. But I’m really glad I ignored that and forged ahead. A great story, and even better that it’s based on true events in the author’s family.

Based on a true story, I found this book heartbreaking and fascinating. It can’t help but hook you right from the beginning. I became invested in all of the characters and just couldn’t put it down.
