Might even give this 4.5 stars. Really enjoyed this novel about family, secrets, love, and loss. The characters were well-written, well-rounded, and human. The story was intriguing, and captivating. While I was a little disappointed by the ending, it was only a little. Overall, I recommend this book.

I could appreciate this book for what it was: a perfectly fine historical beach-y read. While it deals with heavy topics, it's relatively light compared to other books set during this time period (1940's). It doesn't comment much on what's going on in the world, focusing more on family drama instead. I loved the writing and the pacing. The way the book was structured between the six different characters was well balanced and I enjoyed it. (And can we talk about how beautiful the cover is??)
What I didn't care for were the ethical problems of the character's decisions and how it's never addressed at all. The ending is sudden and leaves very little pay off. I wanted to like and care for the characters, but when they kept doing terrible things I lost all my respect for them. Grief is used as the main motivator, yet there was very little communication between the characters about their grief, and it was all brushed aside in the end.
This book could have received a better rating from me if the ending had been handled better, but overall the whole concept fell flat because of the bad decisions.

...sadly, too, because the true story has so much potential to be captivating.
The characters in this book started to feel like family by the end of the story. I enjoyed the realistic tensions and emotions shared throughout the relationships. The historical setting was fun and intriguing.
The characters in this book are so rich they really drew me in. Although there may have been some predictable parts, the story really illustrated how far a parent will go to protect their child.
