“You’re here” she says “You’re here. You’re here.”

Edit: it’s been a year and I still can’t stop thinking about this book. It has so many layers and discussions all packed into one- discussions on power imbalances, consent (and what it actually means to give consent), statutory rape, grooming, critiques of the #MeToo movement and the obsession with putting men like Strane on some sick pedestal for the world to gawk at, and the outside pop culture influences that many young girls and women are affected by- both in how they see themselves and how others see them. It is also a book that has still left such an impact on me and has made me mindful of the media I consume that deals with similar themes.

i didn’t like the long chapters and didn’t love how vanessa kept enabling and defending her abuser.

A flawless examination of the societal factors that contribute to the abuse of women, the inadequate systems and human responses to the trail of breadcrumbs predators drop along the way. Each character, no matter how minor, was real, flawed, and a mirror of our society today. Incredible, sobering read.

I devoured this in three days and felt like I was reading my own diary. I've never read anything that describes the nuances of abuse survival so well, particularly located in the early 2000s. I found it affirming, confronting, triggering, and a really fucking good read.
