“It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.”

this was an exhilarating read. now i get why everyone raves about this trilogy!!

tolkien describes everything so vividly that i feel like im reading a history book or something. his attention to detail is so immaculate that my brain knows exactly the word-movie to show in my mind's eye.

this story grabbed my heart and slowly but surely broke it.

Samwise's loyalty to Frodo is stronger than dwayne johnson i swear

it had me guessing till the very end and pushed me to finish until i..uh..finished it at like...
1am loll

gollum is sméagol, sméagol is gollum...i have mixed feelings abt him tbh.

mixed with just the right amount of humor, wit, quotable phrases, sorrow and suspense, this easily made it to the five star tier.

Better than the first.

Too much singing (and too many magic items that are way too convenient).

Also I ship Sam and Frodo, especially in the last couple chapters. And definitely Gimli and Legolas.. they literally wanna away together

Samwise the Brave

Just gorgeous. Slower than the Fellowship on the whole (second part mostly), but with such beautifully written, touching moments of true friendship. My favorite parts were when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were looking for Merry and Pippin. Their constant reaffirming dedication to each other and their missing friends was so touching. I also loved Merry and Pippin with Treebeard and the Ents. And MAN, was the ending gruesome. Tolkien’s description of Sam vs Shelob was the most violent his writing has ever been, I was actually shocked at the gore.

Movie note: I was extremely impressed at how accurate the movie is. So many little details were included and it just shows how much care and thought they put in to getting Tolkien’s story right and making the words come to life as he intended them to. Having seen the movies first, I originally thought that Legolas and Gimli’s humorous competition to see who could beat the other at killing the most orcs was surely something that the movies made up for comedic relief, but no! That was all Tolkien.

The world is immersive and I’ve definitely enjoyed these books to a certain degree but man oh man they are just so slow. Also this one has two main storylines which I don’t have an issue with but we don’t even see Frodo and Sam until more than halfway through the book??? Weird way to structure it I was definitely not a fan of that.

The beginning of this dragged on for what felt like forever. The chapter with Tree beard and Pippin and Merry has to be one of the most boring chapters I have ever read in my entire life but thank goodness that story picked up after that.

Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the story. It was still clunky for the most part but thank God for audiobooks and Andy Serkis' narration. I loved reading the Battle of Helms Deep but I will say that the movie's adaptation was much better here.

The dialogue in this second book was much more wholesome, maybe because we've gotten to know the characters better. Anyhoo, an alright reading experience with some hiccups, 3/5 stars.

Absolutely incredible
