Wanted to finish some graphic novels that I had around.
This one has an interesting premise. It came out in 2009, and it follows the groundbreaking work of Watchmen or Invincible.
I would recommend it to anyone who liked the above. I am getting bored of super-heroes and post-superheroes unless they have more that just escapism to share, This one is existential and a little mind-bending. The art is not my entirely to my taste with a realistic sensibility and heavy use of shadow. Lots of dark colors. It seems a reaction against the action heavy art and spandex suits.

I really thought I would like this, having enjoyed Criminal and Fatale, but this really isn't as good. The Super Hero stuff drags the story down and makes it feel fragmented and lost.

AMAZING! One of my favourite graphic novels ever. What great art and great writing. Immediately went out and picked up everything else Ed Brubaker after this.

Mainly narrated from the pov of Zack Overkill, a super-villain who gave evidence against his boss and mentor, Black Death, and in return is in a witness protection program and on drugs that nullify his powers. Occasionally the narration leaves Zack, in what seems like omniscience, and shows what others--usually the Black Death's henchmen, are doing. A combination of noir fiction and Watchmen.

Wow. This book was pretty awesome. I like Mark Waid's stuff about guys being good or bad but it's nothing compared to this book. Brubaker may be one of my favorite authors period.

Zack Overkill and his twin brother were evil super villians. Then his brother was killed and Zack went into Witness Protection. He has testified against his boss the Black Death. So he knew he would be hunted. A group called SOS supervises his protection and feeds him drugs that keep his powers gone.

Zack buddies up to a co-worker and the co-worker introduces him to drugs of a different type. They counter act the ones that SOS are giving him and his powers come back.
Instead of doing bad things though he is sneaking out at night and saving the day.
Then the baddies realize he is still alive.

Brubaker and Phillips are ruling in my little warped mind as the graphic novel kings. They take evil dudes (my favorite) and put a whole new spin on them. Wants more.

It's rare that I find a work that I think is too short. Usually the problem is that writers stretch out books well beyond the ability of their ideas to sustain the narrative, but in this case Brubaker simply had too many ideas for a six-issue run. The last couple issues layer plot twist upon plot twist on top of each other, to the point where the story almost falls into self-parody. It's a pity, because the first half is actually quite compelling and deliberately paced. Good art too.
