Omg this book was AMAZING!!! High stakes, amazing tension throughout the story and between the characters, and beautiful, visceral writing. The pacing is impeccable. There is never a dull moment in this book, and the two main characters complement each other so well. I immediately felt connected to both of them, especially the FMC and her struggles. This is enemies-to-lovers how it should be done. For me, it also had just the right amount of spice that flowed seamlessly with the rest of the narrative.

Honestly, just...if you enjoy enemies-to-lovers, you must read this book. You MUST read it!!

I'd had this sitting on my TBR for a while, and I'm actually sad that I didn't get around to it sooner because I didn't sleep so I could finish it. It was that good.

I want to start by saying that I was a little unsure if I'd like this book based on the previous reviews and the bad luck I've had with reading fantasy romance recently. But I can say that with was definitely a case of "just because they don't like it, doesn't mean you won't".

This was a very fun fun, quick read that plesantly surprised me. If you like:
  • Enemies to lovers
  • Queen x bodyguard romance
  • Assassins
  • Snarky MCs

This is your book.

It's well-written and the dialogue didn't feel clunky. The main characters were both likable and their interactions through the book were *chefs kiss*.  Lastly, there was enough action peppered throughout the story that it kept me interested and wanting to know more.

I did feel like some parts were a little rushed, especially when all I wanted was to have more time to understand the world and what the characters were going though (hey, I love a slow burn!). I think the story would have benefited from being longer, especially in terms of the romance
(what do you mean they go from being enemies to head-over-heels in love in a month?!).

i’ll tell you what - i didn’t expect to LOVE this book as much as i did. what i THOUGHT was going to be a little palate cleanser place holder ended up being a really captivating and unique experience

elma and rune were AMAZING lead characters, both a breath of fresh air in terms of “enemies to lovers”. this book felt like a TRUE enemies to lovers trope, not just a “i don’t like you” to lovers. and i pride myself at being able to pick up what the big plot twist is going to be…

but not this book. i was taken ABACK when the twist came about halfway through the book. i wish this was a series, that there were more hi-jinx for elma and rune to embark on, but it really was the perfect story, beginning middle and end

Overall I enjoyed and thought it was a fun standalone romantasy! The story really picked up about halfway through and I couldn’t put it down after that.

My main critique is that the ending felt so rushed to me, and I wish the book would’ve been a little bit longer to draw some things out or give more detail.

I thought this book had all the sustenance for a good quick read. I powered through in a few days and thoroughly enjoyed myself!! Forbidden love, family trysts, betrayal all of it and a good ending that made sense !! If you’re in a slump I think think would be GREAT to get you back in the groove

I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC for this book and sending every theory and reaction I had to the author as I read it. Below is a spoiler-free review for those considering picking up a copy.

I found reading this book to be entertaining and, in a way, comforting. The banter between the FMC and MMC never failed to make me smile, and enough little hints were dropped that major story revelations left me with a sense of "that makes sense" and accomplishment, rather than coming out of left field. There were some characters and spans of time that I initially wished were expanded upon more, but upon further consideration I decided that Smitherman had struck a reasonable balance in giving the readers what they need to know without going off on unnecessary tangents. The same goes for use of darker kinks and magic: it is just enough without overpowering the story.

There is a very good chance that I will reread this one later. It was satisfying and comforting, which is just what I needed.
