Tanta coisas que aconteceu em pouco mais de 400 páginas...
Estou a adorar conhecer todas as personagens. Adoro os Rostov, os Bolkonski, o Pierre, a Natacha.
Neste volume não se abordam batalhas e para mim a leitura fluiu melhor. Estou a adorar, mais uma vez, a escrita do Tolstoi.

Tolstoy's concept of history:
When historians examine historical events, particularly wars, they assign certain obvious events, e.g, wills of monarchs and military men as causes for one battle or whole wars which Tolstoy thinks utterly omissive of unknown yet equally important factors.
History is a machine in which every single contituent brings about its motion. Hence, singling out some part as the sole mover is to say, in Tolstoy's metaphor, that momentum is the result of mass only, dismissing the equally weighty factor of velocity. Moreover, only on a holistic view of the historical moment under analysis the emergent phenomenon of war is understood in its complexity: war is irrational but inevitable, it is an automatic system that takes in its own volition, and the will of Bonaparte is no more influential than a soldier's, all are tools in the invisible mechanism of how things must come to pass (in other words, fate or God's will). So, any reductionistic attempt at investigating a historical occurance is doomed to failure, because the whole machinery is continuous and defining this and that as causes interrupts this universal motion and yields false judgements. Like a Strange Loop, where the beginning is indiscernable from the end: causes are just successive indistinguishably significant events.
However, it seems to me that understanding Tolstoy's idea as determininsm or fatalism overleaps a deeper level of comprehension. I like to think of it as Adam Smith's Invisible Hand of free market economy. Individuals seek only self-interests in producing goods or engaging in some enterprises (free will is manifested here), the collective result of which benefits all on a holistic perspective, though the individuals intend not or seek not the greater good: it just happens (or emerges). And so does historical events, albeit the emergent here is the greater evil. War is as old as history itself, yet, the natural increduelity instilled in man that slaughtering each other is absolutely irrational we justify it by pointless reasons as nationalism and vacuous ideologies, anyway, lets not miss its dependence on ungraspable and seemly insignificant initial conditions.
Characters:
What I focus most on in reading fiction is characters, (dear plot, I notice you as well, but ... you know, being contingent and stuff, well *stutter* yeah..)
However, the Russian stories I came to read are spectacular in this aspect of literary writing and, faithfully, Tolstoy mastered this penetrative art of painting characters.
Though I hate to single out favourites in general (because I believe that everything can affect one if one responds properly) – I chose Pierre Buzukov and Maria Bolkonsky not as my favourites but, as to some myserious reasons, as ones I came to admire.
Pierre is an irrational philosopher. His questions are objective and reasonable yet his answers are subjective and emotional. He is an illegitimate son who inherits his father and becomes quite rich and included in the uppercalss society. Nevertheless, he does not fit, he is awkward, absentminded, physically strong and big, wears glasses, capable of lengthy meditations and musings yet sometimes bursts into emotional expressions like rage or happiness.
His life is centered on the question: "what for?" – a.k.a meaning of existence and everything. Throughout the novel, Pierre sought it in many ways: freemasonry, philanthropy, sensual pleasure, love... but at the end of the day, he found it where Tolstoy himself has: in simple poor peasants, whom guided both to faith in God, which instilled in Pierre an internal moral compass that answers every "what for(s)?".
Another character that I like is Maria Bolkonsky. A plain religious girl, whom her despotic father makes her life hell but she submissively lets him because her life's moving force is faith and her aspiration is moral perfection. Anyway, life and earthly happiness tempt her and she continually fights against sinful impulses and self-engrossed desires. She is exceptionally moral not because she did win her spiritual battle, but because she never quitted that everlasting and invisible struggle, which rendered her with that melancholic air of longing for where she was not, a place of rest beyond earth, that is, paradise.
There are in the human character that which is intentionally given but also the involuntarily flowing and presently radiating. The latter is what fascinated me in Pierre and, to a lesser degree, Maria, say what I say the whole day, I can never explicitly grasp it. It is what R. W. Emerson calls: charm.

What a journey. This book is a lot of things. This feels more like the thoughts of Tolstoy on the war between Europe and France sprinkles with a novel on top. It is epic in size, scope and storytelling. I 100% get why this is one of the greatest books written. Is it good? Of course not, it's a classic book, they are not supposed to be good anymore.
I will say though that there were many moments in here that gripped me. Far more than in other classics

Έχω διαβάσει αρκετά κλασσικά μυθιστορήματα, αλλά ρωσική λογοτεχνία δεν είχα διαβάσει ποτέ μου. Η μητέρα μου τρέφει μεγάλη αγάπη προς του Ρώσους συγγραφείς, ωστόσο δεν είχε τύχει να διαβάσω ποτέ κάποιο από τα γνωστά ρωσικά έργα. Τελικά αποφάσισα να δανειστώ και να διαβάσω τον πρώτο τόμο από το Πόλεμος και Ειρήνη, ένα βιβλίο για το οποίο είχα ακούσει πολλά σχόλια (και θετικά κι αρνητικά) και μπορώ να πω ότι δε με απογοήτευσε.
Σαφώς και για να κατανοήσεις το ύφος και τη γραφή ενός βιβλίου, το πιο σωστό είναι να το διαβάσεις στη γλώσσα στην οποία γράφτηκε. Επειδή όμως δεν το διάβασα στα Ρώσικα, αλλά στα Ελληνικά, θα αρκεστώ να σχολιάσω τη γραφή του Τολστόι όπως έχει μεταφραστεί. Έχοντας ακούσει πολλά για τη βαριά γραφή των Ρώσων συγγραφέων, περίμενα ότι θα ήταν ένα πιο δυσνόητο ή αργό βιβλίο. Η γραφή του Τολστόι πράγματι ήταν λεπτομερής, πυκνή αλλά δεν κυλούσε αργά και προσωπικά, δε δυσκολεύτηκα ιδιαίτερα να παρακολουθήσω την εξέλιξη της πλοκής. Με ωραίες περιγραφές κι εικόνες, σκιαγράφησε τη ρώσικη κοινωνία κατά τη περίοδο των Ναπολεόντειων Πολέμων και συνέδεε με ωραίο τρόπο τα ιστορικά γεγονότα με τα φανταστικά. Ο γλαφυρός τρόπος γραφής του με έκανε να έχω μια πλήρη εικόνα για τους ήρωες και για τους χώρους που εκτυλίσσονταν τα γεγονότα του βιβλίου, κάνοντας με να νιώθω σαν να βρίσκομαι κι εγώ στο πεδίο της μάχης ή στις συγκεντρώσεις της καλής ρωσικής κοινωνίας.
Οι χαρακτήρες στο βιβλίο ήταν αρκετοί και ο κάθε ένας είχε διαφορετικά γνωρίσματα από τους άλλους. Ο Τολστόι περιέγραφε διαφορετικά το κάθε πρόσωπο, από την εμφάνιση μέχρι τις πράξεις του και ήταν ενδιαφέρον να παρακολουθώ το πώς συμπεριφερόταν ο κάθε ένας. Κάποιοι μου άρεσαν περισσότερο (μπορώ να πω ότι ο Πιέρ είναι ο αγαπημένος μου χαρακτήρας), κάποιοι άλλοι λιγότεροι αλλά ανεξάρτητα από την εντύπωση που μου άφησαν, με έβαλαν σε σκέψεις σχετικά με τις πεποιθήσεις τους, τις ενέργειές τους και τον χαρακτήρα τους γενικότερα. Ο Τολστόι έπλασε ρεαλιστικούς χαρακτήρες και με τις φιλοδοξίες του, τα προβλήματά του και τα ελαττώματά τους, κατάφεραν να μου κεντρίσουν το ενδιαφέρον και να με κάνουν να θέλω να εμβαθύνω περισσότερο σε αυτούς.
