shocking of me to have read a book of this length so quickly but i thought this was really good. it’s nice to just read a book where they’re both just really into each other. the approach to grief, trauma and abuse was well done too

So convoluted, complicated and totally fascinating! This story has so many plot twists, it takes you in one direction, then suddenly goes sideways and you get whiplash. It’s very dramatic, very angsty, and completely emotional.

I can’t say this is a story about Phoenix and Lennon only, because there’s all these other characters that also take a place in your heart. They are all important, and they all have an effect on the story. I loved the complications and the underlying theme that music is at the heart of all involved.

Lennon is the daughter of a professional songwriter, her mother died when she was born and her father raised her alone, with the help of next door neighbor, Mrs. Palma. She’s a good student, she’s overweight and binges on food to fill up a void in her soul.

Phoenix is the typical bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Abandoned by his mother at seven, raised by an abusive alcoholic father, victim to frequent beatings. His benediction is his best friend Storm and his grandmother, who give him shelter when things go nuclear at the ramshackle trailer where he lives.

Phoenix is about to fail English class and wouldn’t be able to graduate, so the teacher convinces Lennon to help him pass the class. Phoenix is proud, he doesn’t want the help but needs it. Lennon is very authentic in her desire to help him out and does, he passes the class and is able to graduate. Through the process, they become friends, but Lennon has a crush on him. Phoenix is also starting to realize how beautiful inside Lennon is and starts to consider to keep in touch, even with his plans to leave town after graduation and travel to Hollywood in search of rock and roll fame. But then, an opportunity to shine in front of a label executive, in a gig where they got a chance, turns into a huge betrayal that destroys all that could ever be between them.

Four years later, Phoenix is in a downward spiral, and the only person who can help him is Lennon. And this is when we’re immersed in a very dramatic and turbulent story of drugs, unrequited love and redemption. The story was fascinating, ever changing, unpredictable and surprising. And what’s even better, there are characters within the plot that are now screaming to have their stories heard and I hope and pray that the author hears those calls and gives us those stories.

I loved the passion, the insecurity, the need for redemption and the love that flourished even in the midst of hostility and jealousy. Phoenix was like the sun, his talent was superlative, and Lennon didn’t recognize the talent she herself had and envied his. Loved their evolution and how Lennon was slowly coming out from behind his shadow. Addictive!

The book was amazing. Rock star romance with a plus size FMC!! I felt at times it was repetitive, but understood those parts needed to be. Mental health, eating disorders and addiction is one of the main topics in this book and the way the author wrote on these topics was…just so real! I definitely related to a lot of the feelings the main characters had. The author definitely has a way to pull you into the story.

This book was trashy, badly written, extremely fatphobic, not sensitive enough on very harsh topics and there were no trigger warnings at all!

There was a r@pe scene, where the MC wakes up to another woman eating her out, while her boyfriend watches! He was watching her and encouraging the assault. And yes, this was assault because she was asleep and unable to consent in her condition.

I don’t even want to get into how the MC is only viewed as pretty and only views herself as pretty once she loses weight.
Let me tell you one thing, somebody can be fat and beautiful. Everybody is beautiful!
Fat is not a dirty word, and being fat isn’t necessarily a bad thing, although in this case it was hugely cause to her binge eating disorder (which wasn’t talked in any way) and even though her ED needed to not be dismissed by everyone she knew just because she was fat, losing that much weight isn’t always the absolute best option. You don’t always need to lose weight, or get thinner, you don’t need to be thin to be beautiful and it’s other people’s faults if they can’t see past or through your exterior.

Honestly, this book just ticked me off, I skipped some chapters and skimmed quite a bit because I lost interest, but didn’t DNF because I prefer to only review once I’ve read the whole book. Also, this was marketed as a grovelling trope, WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN?! The last 66 pages or so I guess could be counted but he had no redemption in my mind anyway.
