The book cover, the blurb on the back and some of these reviews prepared me for a really weird gross and unhinged book. I was fully prepared for some type of breast milk feederism stuff or something. None of this came through. The book was enjoyable nonetheless but this was a severe case of mismanagement expectations.

Instead we just got an overely honest internal dialogue. The weirdness comes from the main character Rachel having a severe eating disorder, mommy issues and some slightly more uncomen kinks but nothing as wild as I was let to expect. She's slowly coming to terms with the fact that not everyone lives the way she does. All of this sone through in a scene where she unhingedly eats a sundae early in the book. Which admittedly was incredibly funny.

The promised weirdness reaches its peak very early on and kind off flat lines after. This makes the book drag a bit in the middle. 

The ending makes up for it though, every piece of the book comes together perfectly. I found the ending very worthwhile.

This book is also very much about being Jewish and what it means to be and to be raised (American) Jewish. I myself am not Jewish and i suspect that I lack a bit of cultural context to fully take in that part of the book.

There zionists views being expressed by some of the characters. Whilst the text is leaning on anti-zionism I can imagine a character voicing those ideas can be pretty triggering.

i went into this knowing that i wasn't the target audience for this novel but still came out at the end of this book feeling like i had been through something extremely off-putting. it's a psychosexual obsessive and heavy-handed story with just an uncomfortable level of descriptive Freudian fantasization. 

there were a lot of interesting ideas from the author but not a single one of them felt fully explored, probably because there wasn't a single 3-dimensional character to flesh them out. it felt flat and repetitive and anti-climatic.

also, my favorite quote from the entire novel turned out to just be a Yiddish proverb.

I was expecting the nature of the book and the things it at times deals with, such as eating disorders and mommy issues that this would be a serious read. I found myself laughing out loud at times and genuinely tearing up, feeling seen by Rachel's feelings and the genuine love and vulnerability she feels. Even thought it wasn't a <spoilers> happy ending where the girl gets the girl in the end, I found it hopeful that she didn't backslide or relapse into her old ways. I found it inspiring, and humbling, for her to learn the lessons she did. The prose, as funny as it is, was at times poetic and lovely to read. I finished the entire book in one sitting, would definitely reccomend!
