The fourth instalment in the Thursday Murder Club series continues the humour and English charm of the earlier mysteries. The quirky friendships of the Club members continue to spark, though more emotionally charged elements arise as well, such as dementia and euthanasia. These add an unexpected poignancy and depth to the crime novel.

The crime itself is cleverly handled and well-plotted. This time Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron are given greater roles in its investigation while Elizabeth withdraws for much of the story to cope with her partner Stephen’s health difficulties.

One or two new peripheral characters arrive on the scene at the retirement village during the novel, and they may well play a larger role in later stories the author promises to write – albeit not immediately.
