The ending of this book is why it’s a 3 and not a 2 star for me. The beginning of the book was looking like it might be one of my favorite books ever, but then it got too long, too depressing, and too slow. I understand why the author made the story follow them into adult hood, but I wish it had just stayed with them in college.

“We are all living, at most, half of a life, she thought. There was the life that you lived, which consisted of the choices you made. And then, there was the other life, the one that was the things you hadn’t chosen. And sometimes, this other life felt as palpable as the one you were living.”
this is one of my all time favorite books, and i find myself thinking about it often. this is a story about two friends who create a game together, and as the blurb goes, are “often in love, but never lovers.” but beyond that, this is a story about friendship, love, grief and the messiness of growing up and going through the phases in life. this book spans decades of sam and sadie’s lives, and throughout their story, we learn of their success, failures, pain, and heartbreak. i thought the storytelling was brilliant and creative, and so beautifully crafted that i savored the words i read. 5 stars - for its sheer ability to make me feel so many different emotions in 400 pages.

I’ve noticed off and on negative critiques about the author, so i won’t go there. As for the novel, it was a very enjoyable and unique story - two best friends that make video games, along with a complicated “are we friends or lovers?” layer. Several plot twists literally left my jaw on the floor. Sans the author, the story is great.
