8/10 - Very good.

Listened to on audiobook and was first put off by the reader’s almost monotone presentation, but I got used to it and didn’t notice after a while. A book about the complexity of human relationships, set in the world of video game creation. Need not be a gamer to appreciate.

A very readable novel, it sucked me right in. Interestingly, I also really enjoyed the whole talk about and description of video games, I completely got why people would be obsessed with them even though I am not. So that's clearly a compliment to the author who manages to make readers care about and enjoy topics they don't otherwise care about. Also, great social commentary and analyses without being too on the nose about it. It simply fit in with the story.
I still did not love the book and I didn't get the whole friendship dynamic. Like how could they be such great friends despite what happens and the way they treat each other? Anyhow, I still really appreciate that this novel focuses on friendship not romance. So, all in all a really good novel just not one that has the special something I need to love it.

Insomma, bello.

This book was… *checks page count for book* 416 pages too long.

It’s not that I didn’t like it… I just didn’t like the characters*… The plot (which was nonexistent)…. The theme… the climax (or lack thereof)… the “conflict…” Okay okay so I didn’t like anything about it. It was all so… useless.

I remember my middle school self liking the author’s previous work. The author had years and years to improve their storytelling skill which they apparently didn’t because they’re still writing at a middle school level- at least that’s what I chalk my complete disinterest to this … story (and I use that word in the most liberal of ways.)

*Also… Sadie? More like Satan if Satan was a pretentious girl who changed her mind every 5 seconds and could hold a grudge longer than my entire family put together- which is really and truly an amazing feat.

4.5 It worth all the hype and praises, even more

The story follows a boy named Sam, who after a car accident forced to be in the hospital for a very long time. A girl named Sadie, sitting in the waiting area while visiting her older sister in the hospital, who was being treated from cancer, was advised by the nurse to wait in the game room. She found Sam and they start playing and talking for hours. Upon their departure and after the nurse knows that he spoke with the girl, it turns out that Sam doesn’t speak with anyone since he was admitted and the nurse asked her mother if she brings Sadie more often to let him opened up.

After spending “609” hours playing games and having fun in the hospital’s game room, they had a falling out, and after several years without talking to each other and while they studying in Cambridge game designing, they meet again and started to build a game together, and the story starts to unfold.

The book speaks about their friendship and what they faced from depression to racism and the grief they suffer and a lot more of very sensitive topics, within the course of them designing a game in the nineties, and along the story there are flashes from their past explaining their present

One of the best and outstanding writing i’ve read since a very long time, the flow of the book hooked me from the beginning. The very relatable and flawed characters are the best part of book, and the dialogues are amazingly written.

I was afraid that because it is about gaming, which i am not that familiar with this world, that i will not enjoy it, although it was filled with games reference and a sort of heavy technical gaming designing description, but it was formatted that you don’t need to have a previous knowledge to enjoy it and i just fell in love with it.

Chapter “NBC” was one of the best and unique chapters i’ve read in any book

Liked the storyline overall and really wanted to love the book but found it a bit too tedious - the clichéd video game references, and some of the forced vocabulary choices. Overall a good read, but it didn’t live up to the hype.
