This was so much better than the first one. Gild was ramped up with so much misogyny towards Auren, it was so difficult to read and honestly I feel like that book alone could put a lot of readers off this series as a whole. I see the need for book one because it's vital to understanding Auren and then obviously the conflict between Midas and Ravinger but I do think it could've been condensed and combined with this book and that would've solve the issue of scaring readers away. The prose is still good but there continues to be the occasional metaphor that makes me roll my eyes. As a whole though, the book is very well written.

Auren makes me cry, man. I love her so much. I loved reading her journey to becoming more secure in herself. It was heartbreaking to read how initially afraid she was of Fourth's army and how she just kept expecting every man to hurt her or trick her. Learning more about her backstory made my heart break for her even more because I can completely understand how she got into this horrible situation with Midas. God, I just wanna HUG HER. I love the slow burn relationship between Auren and Rip. How he continues to push and challenge her until she begins to question herself and her situations. I like how he opened her eyes without ever crossing the line into abusive Rowan/Rhysand territory. The careful questions he asked her and the little terrible confessions each one got. I just really want Auren to experience real love from someone who appreciates her unconditionally.

I'm fascinated about Rip tbh. I really am looking forward to learning more about him.

Lemme talk about Queen Malina for a second. I love this bitch. Listen, I know she's a total dick but like I get her. She was raised to be a queen so her pompous, self-righteous attitude makes sense. Not saying it makes her a great person but it's accurate. She was supposed to be the queen but there's this stupid rule about needing power to rule so in comes stupid Tyndall with his gold-touch power and a golden woman he's carrying along. She has to be okay with him bringing a girlfriend into the marriage, accepting him changing her entire home into gold and then let him take over her family's throne. I would be pissed too. I would feel resentful of Auren too. So while I wish she would get her head out of her ass about Auren and realize that she could've used a friendly face during those ten years, I also totally get her. I want her to win. I want her to steal her kingdom back and freeze Tyndall out and I want Malina and Auren to become pals and kill him together.

Also, can I say FUCK MIDAS. FUCK HIM SO HARD. I am so glad that Auren finally sees the light and I am praying the next book is all about her finding a way to get back at him and become his ruination. Like god I am rabid for it. This is the type of story I like to see when it comes to 'dark romance'. I don't like the romanticization of abuse. Even book one in this series didn't romanticize it--like yes, Auren romanticizes her situation but it is still clear imo to the reader that this is NOT a good situation for her to be in.

I hope Auren becomes a force to be reckoned with in the next book. I hope she learns to use her ribbons to fuck Midas up.
