Oh. My. Gosh. This was amazing!!!
The characters were awesome and very well thought through. Fink is great, even if he is annoying sometimes. It’s never the bad kind of annoying, if that makes any sense. I LOVE Harlow!
I definitely recommend this!!! Five stars!

While I once again had some issues with writing choices, the pure enjoyment that comes from reading this series is enough for me not to care and to give it a 4/5
Any of my issues with the book are pretty easily ignored, and I can enjoy the book without them bothering me.
I can't wait to read more of the series

TOTAL - ★★★★☆
The Runaway King was fairly slow at parts, but it worked very well as a sequel. I loved the characters and I'm excited to read the next!
_____
Plot - ★★★☆☆
The plot was slow and confusing from time to time, but the twists are super entertaining. I love the way that the narrator cleverly keeps secrets from the reader, so I'm genuinely surprised when things happen.
Writing - ★★★★★
The word choice is believable and narrated just as well as the last book. Jaron is a wonderfully unique voice for the story to be told in, and it flows well from his perspective.
Characters - ★★★★☆
The characters are great, and I love the growth and development that they show. The only issue I have is that the female characters are portrayed stereotypically. They're gentle, nurturing, and sweet; while the male ones aren't.
Creativity - ★★★★★
The world of Carthya and Avenia is incredibly creative, and I enjoyed reading about it.
Cleanness - ★★★★☆
The book is clean sexually and language-wise, but there are some romantic implications and violence. It didn't bother me at all, but it could bother its young target audience.
Conclusion
I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the False Prince and is looking for another fun read!

There are far too many things that work out just right for Jaron in this series but I'm still really enjoying it. It's an easy, enjoyable read that I can't seem to put down. Jaron is my favorite kind of character - way smart, courageous to the point of stupidity, loyal, good intentioned, and a complete smart ass with a healthy arrogance. He's always one step ahead of the game in his efforts to save his few friends and his country. On to book three!
Reread 2020: 2016 me had such good taste in books because YOOOO this book is still everything. I love the characters in this book. I love the plots in this book. I love the world in this book. I love Jaron Artois Eckbert III more than anything in this world??? Like he can do anything?? He is amazing???
He's probably too amazing. Like idk how a fifteen year old is smarter than literally everyone around him but it's fine. IT'S FINE. Damn I love this so much. I fell behind on my reading schedule so I needed to read a lot of this to catch up. But then I accidentally finished it. Go figure.
~~~~~~
This book was SO GOOD. I just can't put it into words. If I thought I loved Sage in the first book, that is nothing compared to how much I love him now. My love for all the characters - Mott, Tobias, Imogen, etc. - have just increased with this book. There is nothing I appreciate more than a character who is witty and clever, and Sage is both of those things. He's brave and smart and just makes so many stupid decisions, but you love him for it and for being a real human. This is easily becoming one of my favorite series!
That ending though! Needless to say, I'm picking up The Shadow Throne IMMEDIATELY!
The first book took its place on one of my top ten favorites and its sequel was no disappointment.
(WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD)
The story begins on the night of Jaron's parents' and brother's funeral. To avoid attending, he makes his way to the garden/courtyard and does some exploring and climbing. He is then confronted by a mysterious assassin who tries to kill him but can only get away with giving his a nasty wound to the shoulder. The assassin is revealed to be Roden, one of the boys who had competed at Farthenwood to be chosen to take the place of the prince. Roden explains that he's working with the pirates and threatens jaron before disappearing.
The night doesn't get any better for Jaron. After a council meeting of the regents in which he was not invited to, Jaron is conflicted with the decision that the regents will choose a steward in a certain amount of days (I think it was 9) to take his place so he can run away and be protected by the Avenian Pirate's threats.
Jaron confronts Conner who is in the dungeon and tries to convince Jaron to let him help him. Jaron turns him away and instead brings Mott and Tobias with him to hide away in Farthenwood.
After a night of drinking at Conner's old estate, Jaron finds his old raggy clothes and runs away with the plan to join the Avenian Pirates in order to seek out Devlin, the one who killed his family, and kill him. He comes across a village under attack by thieves and helps bring a young girl to a noble named Harlowe who her dying mother claims to be her grandfather.
Jaron bring the girl to Harlowe and is praised by the noble who helps heal him and give him clothes. Jaron escapes again and runs away to the Avenian town where the priest lives. He discovers that the priest was killed by Devlin who is now the pirate king by a young boy named Fink.
After a long chain of events, Jaron joins a band of thieves in order to get to the pirates and eventually becomes a pirate once arriving in the secret camp. He finds Imogen to be working as a kitchen girl there (who he cruelly turned away and ordered she leave in order to protect her).
Then comes the ending which was both devastating and wonderful in its own bittersweet way.
I gave this book 5 stars because the characters are still wonderfully developed and the plot had me staying up all night in order to get to the end.
I can't wait for the next book!
I don't quite have words chosen to describe the feelings I've got right now... but they're mostly surprised and sad and hurt and full of respect because that's just the type of subplot that hits me hard, okay? Also the main plot was good too.
One star off because the characters all felt so... uncharacteristic of themselves for the first half and that threw me off. But anyway. Good book. I'm very sad I don't own the last one yet (but believe me, I'll make it happen)
I listened to the audio book version, borrowed from my library and while I was trying to purge my TBR realized I hadn't updated it at all! Oops.
I'll dig out my notes when I get home, and write a quick review.
